Steven Olikara, Founder and President, Millennial Action Project Steven Olikara wants to change American politics as we know it. A self-described political entrepreneur, Olikara leads the Millennial Action Project, a national, nonpartisan organization that’s working with millennial policymakers to overcome partisan gridlock. The Millennial Action Project has organized the nation’s first-ever bipartisan millennial caucus in Congress and is active in 20 state legislatures. Where others see conflict, Olikara sees opportunity to find common ground on issues such as entrepreneurship, democracy reform, education, and the environment. Olikara also served as Senior Advisor to Lighting Africa, an initiative of multi-platinum recording artist Akon, which has provided one million homes in Africa with solar power. A nationally recognized political commentator, Olikara appears regularly on television networks and in publications such as the Wall Street Journal and USA Today. The Brookfield native and University of Wisconsin graduate has also been recognized as a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum, as an Aspen Institute Ideas Scholar, and as a member of Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30.”

Lilith Fowler, Executive Director of Harbor District, Inc. Lilith Fowler knows about redevelopment and revitalization. She served as the first executive director of the Menomonee Valley Partners, where she helped launch an award-winning redevelopment effort. Now, she’s leading the Harbor District, a nonprofit organization created to revitalize Milwaukee’s harbor and surrounding area. For years, the land south of the Milwaukee River and Third Ward that hugs the harbor has been underutilized, even forgotten. Today, the district is on the verge of a rebirth. Two years of intensive planning and public input have resulted in a plan that envisions the transition of the area to a vibrant, multiuse district featuring housing, offices, retail, and modern manufacturing. But the plan also places a premium on green space and waterfront recreation.

Mark Hogan, Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation Secretary and CEO It’s being billed as the largest economic development project in state history. So how did Wisconsin land Foxconn? What will it mean for the region and the state? And what are the risks and rewards of the deal? In this visit to the Lubar Center, WEDC Secretary Mark Hogan will offer his unique perspective on the Foxconn project. Hogan played a key role in the Foxconn negotiations. He and Governor Walker see the deal as transformational, a project that will create thousands of jobs and a new electronics ecosystem in the state. But the Foxconn project is not without its critics, who say the state paid too high a price to persuade the Taiwanese tech giant to locate here. We’ll talk about it all, including what happens next with the project, when WEDC Secretary Hogan joins us.

Dael Orlandersmith—Poet, Playwright, Performer Dael Orlandersmith is a world-renowned playwright and 2002 Pulitzer Prize finalist. She is a native New Yorker, but is in Milwaukee for a Milwaukee Repertory Theater production of her play, Until the Flood. Until the Flood explores the reactions of the St. Louis region to the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in 2014 and the protests that followed. It is part of the Rep’s Neighbor Series, a trilogy of plays in the spring of 2018. The goal is to prompt a larger conversation about what it means to be a neighbor and to build a stronger community. To prepare for Until the Flood, Orlandersmith conducted dozens of interviews, and eventually created eight composite characters, all of whom she plays in the production. The play premiered in St. Louis to strong reviews. During her visit, we’ll talk with Orlandersmith about the production, and why the story she tells is as relevant to Milwaukee as it was to St. Louis.

During his visit to the Law School, Kubo will discuss the current relationship between the U.S. and Japan, from a political, national security, and economic perspective. What impact has the new Trump administration had on that relationship, and how have Japan and East Asia been affected by an increasingly provocative North Korea? In addition to serving as a senior fellow at The Tokyo Foundation, Kubo is a member of the U.S.–Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange and a former Japan scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

Cyrus Farivar, author of Habeas Data: Privacy vs. the Rise of Surveillance Tech We live in an age where our personal information is routinely collected. Data from our cell phones, credit cards, our online viewing history. Video from closed-circuit surveillance cameras. In his new book, Habeas Data, award-winning tech reporter Cyrus Farivar writes, “With technology that can capture all of this information routinely for private companies and governments, de facto mass surveillance becomes trivial. Today, it’s almost impossible to hide from such data collection without essentially acting like a crazy person: ditching your phone, your car and turning away from the modern world.” The problem, Farivar says, is that American privacy law is ill-equipped to respond to the explosive growth in surveillance technology. To make his case, Farivar examines ten historic court decisions that have defined our privacy rights and matches them against the capabilities of modern technology. Farivar is the Senior Business Editor of Ars Technica and the author of The Internet of Elsewhere. He is also a radio producer and has reported for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, National Public Radio, Public Radio International, The Economist, Wired, The New York Times, and others.
Honorable Goodwin Liu

Honorable Goodwin Liu, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court Justice Liu was appointed to the California Supreme Court in 2011. Before joining the state’s highest court, he was a professor of law and associate dean at the UC Berkeley School of Law. Known as a prolific and influential scholar, Liu’s primary areas of expertise are constitutional law, education law and policy, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Liu was also nominated by President Barack Obama to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 2010, but after being denied an up-or-down vote in the Senate, he withdrew his name from consideration. Liu is the son of Taiwanese immigrants, a graduate of Stanford University, and a Rhodes Scholar who attended Oxford University. Liu graduated from Yale Law School in 1998. During his visit to the Law School, we’ll talk with Liu about his career path (he was a biology major as an undergraduate), his work on the California Supreme Court, and the role of the judiciary in an increasingly polarized political environment.

Megan Twohey, Prize-winning investigative reporter for The New York Times New York Times investigative reporter Megan Twohey is credited with helping ignite the global #MeToo movement and sparking a national dialogue about the realities of sexual harassment and assault for women in all walks of life. Last fall reporting by Twohey and fellow New York Times journalist, Jodi Kantor, revealed sexual harassment allegations dating back decades against Harvey Weinstein, then a powerful Hollywood producer. Their reporting won a George Polk Award honoring “intrepid journalism.” Twohey, who worked as a reporter at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from 2003 to 2007, has focused much of her attention on the treatment of women and children. During the 2016 presidential race, Twohey reported a series of stories of women who accused Donald J. Trump of sexual misconduct. In 2014, she was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize for an investigative series called, “The Child Exchange,” that uncovered an underground network of parents giving away foreign born, adopted children to strangers they met on the Internet. During her visit, we’ll talk about the investigative process, the challenges facing investigation journalism, and her commitment to covering issues affecting women and children.

Alfonso Morales, Milwaukee chief of police He’s Milwaukee’s new top cop. Alfonso Morales joined the Milwaukee Police Department in 1993. He was named interim police chief in February, succeeding retiring chief Ed Flynn. In April, the Fire and Police Commission removed the interim title and made Morales chief into 2020. Morales faces many of the same challenges Flynn faced: tamping down on reckless driving in the city, fighting a persistent violent-crime problem, and improving police-community relations. Morales has also had to deal with the fallout from the controversial arrest of Milwaukee Bucks player Sterling Brown and has seen two of his officers killed in the line of duty. Morales will offer his vision for the Milwaukee Police Department when he joins us at the Lubar Center at Eckstein Hall.

David A. Strauss, University of Chicago, and Ernest A. Young, Duke University Where is the Supreme Court of the United States today? Its membership has largely “turned over” within half a generation. For more than a decade beginning in 1994 the Court was almost unprecedentedly stable (no change in justices), but now a majority of its current members have joined the Court since 2005. Yet has the Court changed all that much, or have we been in an even longer period of continuity than this focus on personnel would suggest? How does the Court of the past generation compare with other post-World War II eras in its approach to important areas of constitutional law involving individual rights and federal–state relations? Join us for a conversation with two Supreme Court experts: David A. Strauss, the Gerald Ratner Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, is an editor of the Supreme Court Review, has argued 19 cases before the Court, and serves as faculty director of the University of Chicago’s Jenner & Block Supreme Court and Appellate Clinic. Ernest A. Young, the Alston & Bird Professor of Law at Duke University, is a scholar of federalism, a former law clerk to Justice David H. Souter of the U.S. Supreme Court, and the principal author of several amicus curiae briefs in several recent Supreme Court cases.
